What Is Pingas?

Pingas is a meme that arose from videos called YTPs (YouTube Poops) which are comedic fan-edits of movies, TV, and so on that are commonly shared via YouTube. A lot of humor found within a YTP arises from editing clips to make beloved characters say gibberish or rude words, as is demonstrated amply within the classic video “ytp sexer” by SPIGGOTAN.

This core feature of the humor of YTPs is key to understanding the rationale behind the rise of Pingas as a meme.

The origin of Pingas is a clip of the 1993 cartoon The Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog. In the episode "Boogey-Mania" the main villain character, Robotnik, says the line:

"Snooping as usual I see.”

This piece of dialogue was then selectively cut and shortened. With the first part of “snooping” getting lopped off and the last three words of the sentence (“usual I see”) omitted to reduce the line to the succinct and iconic:

"-ping as-”

This edit gives the effect of Robotnik saying the word “penis” which, as should be self-evident, is really funny.

The website Know Your Meme attributes the first usage of Pingas in a YTP to the YouTuber Stegbob in a YTP titled "Robotnik Has a Viagra Overdose." The original video was taken down, but an archived version of the video sourced from Internet Archive has since been re-uploaded to the platform.

This particular edit was recreated and reused by numerous other YTP creators in subsequent works because, again, it is really funny to make Robotnik sound like he is saying the word “penis.” The popularity of the original YTP alongside the clip's re-use in other YTPs cemented “Pingas” as a meme among the YTP community which then disseminated to many other people on the internet over time, as memes so often do.
